Floresta do Congo

African Colonization

The African continent was one of the last to be colonized by Europeans. In the Americas, the process of colonization began in the 16 century. Three centuries later the American continent had been decolonized and the first industrial revolution was expanding. Given this, the Europeans were seeking new sources of funds to supply its industries.

In the 19 century, European Nations such as England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany began to explore effectively the African continent. The industrial revolution led to these countries to exploit raw materials, especially minerals, among which we can highlight the iron, copper, lead, in addition to agricultural products such as cotton and rubber; all essential for industrial production.

American Nations that were descolonizadas have become a promising market for European industrial products, considering that demand in Europe for such goods was declining. The European powers, to ensure raw material occupied the Territories contained in Africa, soon after the partition of the continent among the main European countries of the time, giving right to explore the part of each nation.

The Division of the continent of Africa has been consolidated through an agreement held in 1885. This event counted with the participation of England, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain. This agreement was executed at the Berlin Conference. However the exploration process in Africa happened even before the partition of the territory, that's because several countries sent delegations of scientists for the continent. According to them, scientists had the purpose of carrying out scientific researches, but in fact they collected data about the potential of the ore, i.e. The riches of the subsoil.

Years after much of the territory was colonized. Europeans introduced cultures that were not part of the diet of native people, the colonizers promoted the crops with emphasis on the production of coffee, tea, sugarcane and cacao. Another activity developed was the mineral extraction, especially in the extraction of diamonds.

And so the Europeans managed to ensure for a long time the supply of raw materials to power its industries

A colonização Africana

Kalahari Desert

The Kalahari desert is located south of Africa, extends through the territories of Botswana and Namibia.

Two people inhabit the desert region, the Bushmen, and Khoikhoi (also known as Hottentots). The Bushmen are nomadic, living basically herding, hunting and gathering. Estimates indicate that there are about 50 thousand Bushmen living in the Kalahari.
The khoikhoi already living in a strip of desert in the territory of Botswana. Short in stature also live by hunting, gathering and herding sheep. Are also nomadic people of the desert.
In the Kalahari desert rains occur in some short periods of the year, that is, it's not a completely arid desert, what favors the development of vegetation and allows the existence of some species of animals.

The thermal amplitude is also very large, ranging from 50° to 0° degrees Celsius. The flora of the Kalahari features scattered trees, like Palm trees and baobabs, shrub formations, Shrublands and savanna's own herbal xerófitos.

Due to the huge economic potential, the desert suffer threats of natural resources. The region has large reserves of uranium, coal, copper and nickel.

Some mining companies exploring and ravage the desert. In addition, one of the largest diamond mines in the world, is located in Orapa in the Makgadikgadi Pans, a depression in the northeast of the Kalahari.

O deserto do Kalahari

Sahel In English

The Sahel, which the Arabic means coast or border, is a range of 500 km to 700 km wide, and 5400 km long. It is situated in sub-Saharan Africa between the Sahara desert to the North, and the Sudan savanna to the South. Between the Atlantic Ocean and the Red Sea.

The Sahel straddles the following countries: Gambia, Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Algeria, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Sudan, South Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia. Is a transition zone between the paleoártica and the afro-tropical cozened, i.e. between the aridity of the Sahara and the fertile Savannah.

It is a fitogeográfica region dominated by the steppe vegetation, which receives a rainfall varied over the years.

Might think that agriculture in the Sahel is completely doomed to misfortune. However, the region is protected by a green belt consisting of a highly diversified flora which protects it from the winds of the Sahara. The Sahel also facing long periods of drought. Between 1968-1974, the prolonged drought has led to a situation of hunger in the countries of the region, what motivated the establishment of the International Fund for agricultural development, a United Nations specialized agency

Sahara Desert

The Sahara desert is the largest and hottest in the world. In terms of desert area just behind the Antarctica which is the largest desert area on the planet. Its surface is of 9,065,000 km ² and is located in the North of the African continent, separating it into two regions to Mediterranean Africa that lies in North and sub-Saharan Africa, located in the South. This is bordered by the Red Sea, to the West the Atlantic Ocean and on the North by the high mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, it is estimated that the desert has more than 2.5 million years ago.

The Sahara extends across the territory of the following countries: Tunis, Algeria, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Libya, Chad, Egypt and Sudan. The Sahara desert expands and contracts in regular cycles, in such a way that its borders with those countries are not constants. In this desert for different regions because of the differences of temperature, altitude and geology are home to different plants and animals. Among the animals that inhabit the region include: Scorpions, lizards, snakes, dromedaries and Antelope adapted desert conditions

The rains are extremely rare and temperatures can reach the 50° C degrees during the day and -4° C at night. With these weather conditions is virtually impossible to live in the Sahara. Few people between the Tuareg and the Bedouin inhabit this region. The Bedouin are practically mobile merchants.
